About Youth Leadership Greater Washington
For the past decade, Youth Leadership Greater Washington has identified and connected promising young leaders and given them the tools they need to make a difference in their community. An outgrowth of the successful adult program, Leadership Greater Washington, and run by volunteer graduates of its program, Youth Leadership Greater Washington brings together approximately forty to fifty  high school sophomores and juniors from across the metro area each year for intensive hands-on leadership training and experiential learning.

What We Do
  • Identify exemplary high school students who have demonstrated leadership qualities and a concern for their communities
  • Put together a class of forty to fifty students annually, who represent the geographic areas and groups that make up Greater Washington
  • Present in-depth programs that acquaint participants with community needs, opportunities, problems and resources
  • Study such issues as cultural diversity, health and human services, government and society, media and communications, arts and culture, crime and justice, and education
  • Allow interaction with community leaders and decision makers
  • Provide opportunities for students from different areas and backgrounds to develop relationships and a level of mutual respect and trust
  • Foster interest in voluntary participation in community affairs
