Community Service Day Gives Students a Strong Professional Start

March 14, 2018

On Tuesday, March 13, LGW partnered with Don Bosco Cristo Rey High School for the first Community Service Day of 2018.

The morning session focused on providing high school students with the toolkit for professional success in the workforce.  Under the leadership of Ana Chapa ('18), every DBCR student participates in the Corporate Work Study Program, where students gain professional work experience and earn money to pay for a portion of their education.

The purpose of the Corporate Work Study Program at Don Bosco Cristo Rey is to empower and enable college-bound under-resourced students to succeed in the professional workplace. LGW members enjoyed a tour of the campus and learned more about a day in the life of a Don Bosco student.

Following a brief info session, members participated in a networking and mock interview workshop with high school Sophomores. LGW volunteers asked students a series of questions regarding their work-study sites and recreated traditional job interview scenarios. DBCR Students did a phenomenal job engaging with LGW leaders, answering questions and receiving constructive feedback. Some students, while ordinarily shy and introverted, were able to gain confidence by practicing conversation with adults in a leadership position.

“I even surprised myself with my answers to some questions and how confident I felt.” -Don Bosco Cristo Rey student

LGW Members were extremely impressed with the professionalism of the students and the caliber of programming that Don Bosco provides. It is evident that DBCR students are not only prepared to enter college in a few but also prepared career-wise, as skilled and valuable members of the workforce at a very young age.  Thank you so to the leadership team at Don Bosco and to our gracious volunteers.
