When Monumental Sports signaled their intent to move the Washington Wizards and Capitals - cornerstones of the Gallery Place/Chinatown area - to Northern Virginia, it was yet another setback to a downtown DC still rebounding from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. But relief soon arrived: plans were announced for the teams to keep playing at the Capital One Arena, and with that came an opportunity not just for revitalization, but for reinvention.
Revitalizing downtown cores post-COVID calls for new ideas - ideas that are centered around equitable development, the growth of small businesses, and creating spaces geared towards community engagement. Through public-private partnerships and a reexamination of what makes urban spaces work, DC has the opportunity to bring new life not just to the areas around the Capital One Arena but to the city as a whole. But what does a new downtown DC look like? How will it impact the region as a whole? And how can local leaders join this movement for change?
On October 17 we’re hosting a panel at the Verizon Technology and Policy Center featuring DC’s Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development, Nina Albert (’14); President & CEO of the Downtown DC BID, Gerren Price (’24); and Vice President of Verizon Business Sales, Michael Caralis, as they explore their visions for a revitalized, reenergized downtown DC. It’s a monumental moment to rebuild a better district, and we’re inviting you along for the ride.
