About the Honoree

About the Honoree - Howard W. Stone, Jr. ('96)

Howard W. Stone, Jr. ('96) is a third generation Washingtonian who began working for Prince George’s County in 1976. He began his career in public service by working for the County Council, moving on to become a Legislative Assistant to Congressman Steny Hoyer. He was appointed as the Director of the County’s Cable Commission, having written the enabling legislation for Cable Television to be franchised in the County, and went on the work on the staff of County Executive Parris Glendening. Mr. Stone served as the Director of Development for Dimensions Health Care, and later as the Head of Community Relations for the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority. In 1994 he assumed the position of Chief of Staff to newly elected County Executive Wayne K. Curry, and he later went on to become the County’s Chief Administrative Officer. Mr. Stone retired on June 1, 2023, as the Director of the County Council’s Public Safety and Fiscal Management Committee.

Throughout his decades of service he has shown a relentless commitment to the causes closest to his heart. Family and children have always come first for Howard, serving on the board of Planned Parenthood for many years and as Vice Chair of the Prince George’s County School Board. And he has been a longtime and fervent proponent of regionalism, working with the Greater Washington Community Foundation and the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments to develop stronger and more prosperous connections between his county and the surrounding communities. And of course through it all he has remained one of Prince George’s County’s most fervent advocates. He has fought ardently not just for the health, safety, and security of local residents, but also for county’s profile and reputation in our region and beyond, rightfully earning the moniker “Mr. Prince George’s”.

As a civic activist, community cheerleader, and committed regionalist, Howard Stone’s influence and integrity are well known to many across the region, and Leadership Greater Washington is excited to honor him as the 2024 Leader of the Years.
