Our region, like many across the nation, has placed priority on building affordable housing to provide access, opportunity, and enrichment to underserved communities priced out of the neighborhoods where they live and work. And we’re inviting LGW Members to witness this transformation from the ground up.
Jubilee Housing, led by LGW Member Jim Knight (’19), and Sitar Arts Center, led by another LGW Member, Maureen Dwyer (’14), have partnered to transform a vacant commercial building in Adams Morgan into a community center for arts, learning, and affordable living. Working under Jubilee’s Justice Housing® model—deeply affordable housing, with onsite or nearby services, in resource-rich neighborhoods – the new development will include 25 units of affordable housing as well as the ground floor headquarters of Sitar Next Door, an extension of Sitar Arts Center that will expand their footprint by 50%, allow the Center to enroll 66% more children and teens, and grow their creative career training programs for older youth.
On Tuesday, April 22 we’re partnering with Jubilee and Sitar to host a hard-hat, behind the scenes tour to learn about the development and construction of the site, and how this project addresses the need for affordable, community-driven space in a neighborhood where gentrification has seen prices soar in recent years, and displaced long-time residents and participants in both organizations’ programming. This will be an exclusive opportunity for LGW Members to learn about the challenges of building affordable housing in our region, and how two fellow Members are leading the way in providing pathways to success where it’s most needed.
