Mary E. Brown is one of Washington, DC’s most highly regarded youth advocates. She has worked for over 30 years to create meaningful change in the lives of young people. As Co-Founder and Executive Director of Life Pieces To Masterpieces (LPTM), she drives the critical mission of providing opportunities for young Black men in some of DC’s most challenged communities to unlock their creative abilities and transform challenges into possibilities.

She served on the national faculty of NeighborWorks America for 17 years, designing, facilitating, and evaluating nationwide training programs for youth development workers, community developers, and organizers. This experience informed her creation of LPTM’s curriculum, the Human Development System, in partnership with some of LPTM’s first youth participants and families in 1996. Under Mary’s guidance, LPTM shares this curriculum through its interactive workshop series, Color Me Community, with 1,500 leaders in education, business, government, nonprofit, and the arts from over 60 countries.

Mary’s education includes Harvard Business School’s “Strategic Perspectives in Nonprofit Management” Executive Education Program, and a B.S. in Biology from Xavier University. In 2023, Mary co-authored the award-winning article, “Black Leadership and Shared Humanity: A Profile of Generative Reciprocity for Racial Equity” (Reflections, 2023). Her distinguished commitment and impact have been celebrated widely, including by Georgetown University’s John Thompson Jr. Legacy of a Dream Award and the Meyer Foundation’s Exponent Award for outstanding nonprofit Executive Directors. Most notably, Mary’s leadership and dedication are recognized by her trusted relationships with thousands of program alumni and community members.
